Empowering Communities for Better Nutrition: Misra’s Story

In Kellecha Kebele, Habro Woreda, malnutrition has been a long-standing challenge. Families like Misra Ahmeds struggled to provide nutritious diet for her children, largely due to financial constraints and limited access to diversified food sources. Misra’s daughter, Sadiya, suffered from undernutrition, making it difficult for her to grow and thrive.

Right2Grow, in partnership with the Habro Woreda Nutrition Technical Committee and local Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), vow to improve nutrition through advocacy and multi-sectoral collaboration. The project strengthens the role of CBOs in governance, enabling them to advocate for improved nutrition services and influence local decision-making. One of the key interventions has been supporting the Habro Child Nutrition Association, a local CBO that provides vulnerable families with resources to enhance food security. Through Right2Grow’s advocacy, this CBO was included in the Woreda Nutrition Technical Committee, allowing them to voice community needs effectively. As a result, Misra received chickens and papaya seeds—resources that transformed her household’s nutrition and livelihood for locally established CSOs.

A Healthier Future for Misra’s Family

When Misra first received the chickens, she was not awarded about the usage of eggs to the child. But within just a few weeks, she began to see changes. The eggs provided a much-needed source of protein for her daughter, Sadiya, whose health started to improve. The once lethargic child became more active, and her weight gradually increased.

As the hens continued to lay eggs, Misra saw another opportunity—selling the surplus at the local market. The income she earned allowed her to buy additional food items, ensuring her family to have a more balanced diet. Meanwhile, the papaya seeds she planted began to grow, promising another sustainable food source for the future.

Misra was not the only one who benefited. In her village, 143 households received similar support, helping families diversify their diets and improve their overall well-being. More importantly, with strengthened community advocacy, the local government recognized the need for better nutrition services, leading to a 100% increase in the budget for nutrition and WASH programs.

“Before, we didn’t have a platform to voice our concerns,” said a representative from the Habro Child Nutrition Association. “Now, we sit at the table with government officials, ensuring nutrition is a priority in our community.”

Misra’s story reflects the broader impact of Right2Grow’s approach—empowering local actors, amplifying community voices, and driving sustainable improvements in nutrition. By strengthening governance and advocating for inclusive policies, Right2Grow is fostering long-term resilience in Habro Woreda.
